Welcome to Helping Children Survive and Grow, a website dedicated to helping parents, teachers and any others interested in helping children survive the many issues
they face as they are growing up.  We all want our children to become happy, well adjusted, healthy, successful adults.
This website is meant to be a source and a forum where needed information, suggestions, and resources can be found, and feedback is always welcome.  The major areas of concern we are covering for all you teachers, parents and parental figures have been organized into five different areas that include: How to Parent children; How to work with children living in different Family structures; How to insure children receive a good Education ; How to raise Healthy children; and How to help children who have experienced Trauma.  Helpful information and products concerning these issues and opportunities to provide feedback, ideas, stories and suggestions can be found throughout the pages of this website.

The area that concerns those raising children the most is that of how

to Parent these young people most effectively. Those of us who have raised children know that we must change how we parent as our children move from the stages of infants to school age to teenagers to adults, and that each child will react somewhat differently to praise, discipline, joy, humor, etc..

Children are also affected by the Family structure in which they are raised. Today there are many different arrangements of families, including single parent families, blended families, grandparents raising grandchildren, foster families, etc. No matter what kind of family structure children grow up in, there are things we can do to help children survive and grow by finding and using the resources available.

One of the major ways we can help children reach their potential is in the area of education.  We must make sure that they have access to the very best schools and teachers. The education a child receives primarily in the
areas of
reading and mathematics is one of the major keys in determining the degree of success s/he will reach.  Intervention and remediation are critical when dealing with learning issues such as autism, ADHD, hearing, speech, etc. There are many resources and interventions available to help them stay in school, learn, and grow.
Helping children grow into physically healthy adults includes areas such as
diet, exercise, health, illness, and physical disabilities. The issue of childhood obesity with its implications for health in kid’s adult years is becoming more widely acknowledged as well. We must find the best ways to intervene and insure children receive the support and assistance essential for their physical growth and health.
The exposure to trauma in kids’ lives is another area we need to consider when helping children survive and grow. This trauma can occur at home, at school or other places
and can create psychological and emotional problems.  Having many supportive people available is a place to start. The concept of resilience has been evolving over the last ten to fifteen years and we know that early intervention in developing resilience is important to helping children develop into self-sufficient adults.
There are resources and information available about ideas and suggestions on how to work with children as they grow, and how to adjust how we work with them dependent on the nature of each child. For our children to survive and grow into stable positive adults, it is imperative that we be available for them through support, friendship, helping them feel needed and listening to them, as well as accepting, advocating and intervening for them, making it possible for our children to survive and grow into successful, happy adults.
